Showcasing a lingerie brand

Sometimes you have to wonder what planet these people are on. Case in point: I was recently offered the ‘opportunity’ to promote a lingerie brand on my YouTube Channel.

Oh please, can I do this, just the once lol

Laugh, I nearly cried

Now, let’s just take a moment to consider this situation. Me, an individual standing just over 6ft 1in, weighing in at a solid 19 stone, being asked to endorse a lingerie line. It really makes you question what on earth these people were thinking.

Are they completely oblivious to the fact that my physique is not exactly suited for showcasing delicate undergarments? It’s moments like these that leave you scratching your head and wondering if you’ve somehow slipped into an alternate reality. Clearly, these individuals are operating on an entirely different wavelength.

Halloween

Today was an exciting day as I ventured into the enchanting pumpkin fields in anticipation of Halloween.

The vibrant hues of orange, golden, and green painted a picturesque scene that was nothing short of captivating. As the sun began to cast its warm glow over the fields, my lens captured the beauty of the meticulously arranged pumpkins and the cheerful faces of families picking their perfect jack-o’-lanterns.

Amidst the rows of pumpkins, we searched for the perfect shot to grace the month of October in our highly anticipated 2024 calendar. With each click of the camera, we immortalized the essence of autumn and the festive spirit that accompanies this magical season.

Today’s adventure was not only a testament to our passion for photography but also a reminder of the joy that can be found in even the simplest of moments.

Meeting a Californian Adventurer in Need of a Tripod Solution

On my recent trip to Porto, I had an interesting encounter with a fellow enthusiast from California. He had reached a critical point in his photography journey, realising that his current tripod setup was hindering his ability to capture stunning shots. Determined to find an alternative, he stumbled upon the Platypod Ultra, which he believed would be the perfect solution for his needs.

The PlatyPod Ultra

Excitedly, he purchased the Platypod Ultra, hoping it would replace his big, clumsy, and heavy tripod. Unfortunately, his enthusiasm turned to horror as he discovered that the Platypod Ultra was unreliable, unstable, and incapable of properly supporting his beloved Sony camera. Faced with the disappointment of yet another unsatisfactory solution, he was at a loss as to what to do next.

Empathising with his frustration, I decided to step in and offer a helping hand. Recognizing the importance of having the right tools for the job, I offered him my trusty tripod to use for the remainder of his trip. With the stability and reliability, it provided, he could finally capture the breathtaking shots he had been dreaming of.

In a world where finding the perfect equipment can often be a daunting task, it was gratifying to be able to help a fellow photographer overcome his obstacles. As we exchanged photography tips and shared our experiences, the camaraderie between us grew stronger. This unexpected encounter reminded me of the importance of community and support within the world of photography.

Although the Platypod Ultra may not have been the ideal option for him, it serves as a reminder that exploring and trying new tools can sometimes lead to unexpected discoveries. Finding the perfect tripod or camera gear is a personal journey that varies for everyone, and it is through trial and error that we determine what truly aligns with our vision and shooting style.

As for the California adventurer, armed with my tripod, he was finally able to capture the shots he had envisioned. The joy on his face when he reviewed his beautifully composed images was priceless. It was a reminder of how meaningful it is to share our knowledge, experiences, and equipment with others, ensuring that everyone can achieve their photographic goals.

In the end, our chance meeting became not only a testament to the power of a helping hand but also a testament to the enduring passion that the world of photography engenders. So, fellow photographers, let us continue to support and inspire one another, for it is through our connections that we can truly elevate our craft and tell captivating visual stories.

Porto – Portugal

An image taken on my iPhone

During my time in Porto, I had the opportunity to capture some incredible photographs of the city’s landmarks. One subject that caught my eye was the bridges that gracefully stretched across the Douro River. These architectural marvels were not only functional but also added a touch of elegance to the city’s skyline.

The most iconic of these bridges was the Dom Luís I Bridge, with its magnificent arched structure, connecting the bustling districts of Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia. As the sun set behind the bridge, casting a golden glow on the river below, I managed to capture a truly mesmerising shot that highlighted the bridge’s grandeur and the tranquil waters beneath.

An image of the Lighthouse taken on my iPhone.

Another notable landmark I photographed was the lighthouse that stood proudly at the entrance of the Douro River. Its white facade stood in stark contrast against the vibrant blue of the ocean, creating a striking visual contrast.

The lighthouse seemed to guard the city, guiding ships safely into the harbour, and provided a captivating subject for my camera lens. As I observed the lighthouse from different angles, I was able to showcase its uniqueness and the surrounding natural beauty.

In addition to these well-known landmarks, I was also drawn to the unique charm of Porto’s streets and buildings. The city’s rich history and architectural heritage were evident in the narrow lanes, colourful facades, and intricate tile work.

These details brought out the character of the city, and I made it a point to capture their beauty through my lens.

One particularly impromptu discovery was a peculiar shop that I stumbled upon, featuring a Ferris wheel filled with tinned sardines. The sight was both quirky and endearing, and I couldn’t resist stepping inside to explore further.

One of the many bridges to cross the Douro River.

A tin of Sardines – hopefully NOT tinned in 1992.

The shop turned out to be a delightful store specialising in locally sourced sardines, and each tin was intricately designed and neatly showcased on the rotating Ferris wheel. This encounter truly embodied the unique blend of tradition and quirkiness that Porto embraces, and I was fortunate enough to capture this charming moment with my camera.

Overall, my time in Porto was filled with incredible photography opportunities. From the majestic bridges to the captivating lighthouse and the colourful streets, I was able to capture the essence of this charming city.

However, it was the warmth and beauty of the local people that truly left a lasting impression on me. Their friendly nature and genuine smiles made me feel welcome and added a vibrant human touch to the photographs I captured. Porto is a city that combines natural beauty, architectural wonders, and a welcoming spirit, making it a true haven for photographers like me.

Journey to Portugal

I have to admit to being very excited as we prepare to embark on our journey to Portugal tomorrow morning, not the 4am rise however.

For the next five days, we will immerse ourselves in the breathtaking landscapes and vibrant culture of this beautiful country.

As a photographer, I will of course have my camera with me at all times, ready to capture those stunning landscape photography shots that await me.

I am sure Porto and other areas of the country will have many opportunities for capturing moments of awe-inspiring beauty.

I can hardly wait to set foot on this new adventure and witness the magic that awaits us through the lens of my camera. Stay tuned for a visual chronicle on YouTube and of course the website of what I hope will be an incredible journey!

Horizon 22

You can clearly see the relections on both images shown.

The Horizon viewing platform in Bishopsgate, London, offers photographers a unique experience with its breathtaking views over long distances.

However, it’s worth noting that this particular location presents a challenge for photographers due to the abundance of the highly reflective windows.

While the stunning vistas can be captured, photographers may need to be creative in their composition to minimise unwanted reflections.

It is also important to note that tripods are not allowed at the Horizon viewing platform, which can limit stability for longer exposures.

Nonetheless, the platform’s good vantage point makes it an enticing destination for photographers looking to capture sweeping cityscapes and observe London’s remarkable skyline.

You would need to take a rubber lens hood (right) to get the best images, I own one but did not take it with me.

Hours behind the wheel

Behind the wheel for many hour

The drive to Bow Fiddle Rock was an arduous journey, spanning a gruelling 13 hours. As the rain poured relentlessly down, my spirit began to dampen.

The long hours behind the wheel took their toll, leaving me tired and yearning for respite. Hunger gnawed at my stomach, but there was no time to stop and eat as the final destination called me forward.

A lot of Tea and Coffee consumed

Breaks in this arduous journey were for stops of nature and to grab a cup of tea or Coffee to sip at whilst undertaking this epic drive to a place I have wanted to be for a very long time.

Darkness descended swiftly, making the journey even more challenging. Finally, when I arrived at my destination, the cold enveloped me, adding another layer of discomfort to my weary and tired body.

Nonetheless, the sight of Bow Fiddle Rock in all its majestic splendor made it all worthwhile. The breathtaking view , even though just a silhouette against the darkened sky was a testament to nature’s resilience, reminding us that perseverance through any storm leads to moments of extraordinary beauty. And god was Bow Fiddle Rock beautiful!!

I did capture some wonderful photographs making those long hours behind the wheel very worthwhile and I am looking forward to sharing them with you in the coming days/weeks.

Mistakes: Lessons Learned in the field . . .

As photographers, we often find ourselves caught up in the excitement of a shoot, eagerly anticipating the unforgettable shots we’ll be able to capture. However, even seasoned professionals aren’t immune to making mistakes. On this particular day, I found myself stumbling through a series of blunders as I set up my equipment, leaving me with valuable lessons learned and a renewed appreciation for attention to detail.

Not connecting the Mic

First on the list of my unforgivable mistakes was not properly connecting the microphone to the camera. The audio is just as crucial as the visuals, conveying a comprehensive narrative that immerses the audience into the heart of the story. Unfortunately, this meant no sound on the vlog video rendering the vlog unusable on this particular episode. This careless error reminded me of the importance of double-checking every connection before diving into a shoot, as even the slightest oversight can have significant consequences.

Wet feet because I failed in the basics

A photographer’s gear is an extension of themselves, aiding in capturing those magical moments while ensuring their own safety. However, another gaffe of mine was forgetting to put on my trusty wellington boots. I was engulfed in the excitement of the moment, overlooking the sea front that lay before me. As I trudged through the damp ground, feeling the cold seeping into my shoes, I silently gave myself a stern word for neglecting an essential part of my protective gear. The discomfort turned out to be a constant reminder of the importance of being fully prepared and equipped for any kind of shooting conditions.

I keep saying ‘Don’t rush’ but I do it again and again

Lastly, the absence of the two-second delay setting on my camera was a blunder I simply couldn’t overlook. The lack of this feature meant I was unable to capture the perfect long exposures that I had envisioned, with some images having a shudder effect due to movement from the slightest of knocks. It was a missed opportunity to create stunning visuals and showcase the depth of the scene I was documenting. This error reminded me of the importance of being intimately familiar with my equipment before embarking on any shoot and ensuring that all necessary settings are in place to bring my creative vision to life.

Learning …. an ongoing process

While these errors were undoubtedly frustrating at the time, they served as valuable reminders of the importance of meticulous planning and attention to detail within the realm of professional photography. Every shoot, no matter how routine or mundane it may seem, demands our utmost focus and diligence. From meticulously connecting the gear to embracing the appropriate attire, to configuring our cameras for optimal results, every small step can make a monumental difference in the final outcome.

As I reflect on this mishap-filled day, I’m reminded that even the most seasoned professionals are not immune to mistakes. However, it’s how we learn and grow from these hiccups that truly sets us apart. With every error, we gain wisdom, sharpen our skills, and become better equipped for future challenges.

So, the next time you find yourself faced with a series of unexpected blunders, remember that even professionals stumble. Embrace these moments as opportunities for growth and improvement, for it is through these experiences that we evolve into the best versions of ourselves as photographers.

What a Joy

It was just beautiful, it has to be one of the most stunning places I have been to in the United Kingdom, just so beautiful.

Bow Fiddle Rock

I kept saying it during the vlogging process and I will not apologise for doing so, it is so peaceful, restful and yes beautiful to look at.

I did get very lucky with the elements as you will see in the photographs later this month, but here is one for you to enjoy in the meantime.

It was so overwhelming I forget what day I eventually arrived, well the drive was a total of about 16 hours or so?

I met the F7.1 team of jolly men on Friday I think in the Peak District and left them the following day after photographing a cloud inversion, my first by the way, now that was stunning!

The bright moon lit the way

I then set off on the final section of the trip North, another 8+ hours drive from the Peak District to Bow Fiddle Rock, and yes I did nearly give up on more than one occasion, especially when the skies opened up and the rain just poured down.

But I got there about 11pm, I went and had a little look, not venturing down as it was just far too dark and far too dangerous, after which I returned to the van, made my bed, set the alarm for 5am and went to bed and slept.

I awoke at 5, put on the kettle and made a nice hot cup of tea, it was cold and so needed. I then got my camera bag, tripods and wooly hat and walked down the slope that was now brightly illuminated by the very bright moon.

I set up and took a photo immediately, and the first image is that which I have added to this Blog.

I was so lucky, during my visit I had no clouds when I was taking photographs, no rain, red skies AND to top it off I had the moon rise behind Bow Fiddle Rock and within the fiddle gap itself, but that you will have to see on the Vlog once it is released.
